Namkaran Puja — meaning “naming ceremony” — is a sacred Hindu ritual performed to formally give a newborn child their name. It is one of the important Sanskars (rites of passage) and is usually conducted on the 11th, 12th, or a chosen auspicious day after birth.

The ceremony is performed to seek blessings from deities for the child’s health, long life, and positive destiny. The baby’s name is chosen based on astrology (Janam Nakshatra) and is whispered into the child’s ear during the ritual, symbolizing identity and spiritual beginning.

The puja includes purification rituals, invocation of Lord Ganesha, and prayers for protection and prosperity. In Assamese tradition, Namkaran holds deep cultural value, often celebrated with close family and traditional customs.
